A message from the Mayor of the Gharb Local Council
This initiative is the fruit of a joint EU and Malta Government funded project – Wied il-Mielaħ: towards an ecologically sensitive, sustainable tourism. It was realised with the help of the European Regional Development Fund made available to Malta under the Cohesion Policy 2007 -2013.
This project has been undertaken and the country walk has been plotted in an area which until recently was in a state of abandonment and neglect. On Malta joining the EU as a full member, the Gharb Local Council, fully aware of the benefits of membership, embarked on a rehabilitation programme of this valley, which was otherwise, not financially possible. Tourism is vital for the economic development of the Island of Gozo. Gozo has distinctive attractions which include (walking) the breath-taking rural environment especially when it is being transformed into an Eco Island.
Fully aware of this potential, the Gharb Local Council identified the Wied il-Mielaħ area to introduce this country walk as an added incentive towards improving the tourist product of the locality of Gharb. My locality offers a unique holiday experience with a number of the oldest farmhouses on the island which have been rehabilitated and renovated for holiday accommodation. This country walk complements also other already identified country walks across Gozo.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr Chris Said LL.D., M.P., the Parliamentary Secretary for Consumers, Fair Competition, Local Councils and Public Dialogue whose office’s financial support was also crucial. My locality’s appreciation goes also to the Water Services Corporation who have finally stopped the sewage outfall at Wied il-Mielaħ to complement this project and for their support to enhance the environment of the area. Finally but not least, my thanks also go to the Minister Giovanna Debono Minister for Gozo, from whom we have a continued support to improve my locality.
I invite you to come and experience the natural beauty of Wied il-Mielaħ with its surroundings and the history and culture of our locality, Gharb and of our people. We made sure that the area at Wied il-Mielah is accessible to all. When trekking is not possible we encourage you to make use of bicycles to tour the area rather than by car and help us reduce CO² emissions.
Enjoy your visit and help us improve this product by sending us your views and suggestions which would be greatly appreciated.
